Dear Colleagues,
It is the Guest Editor’s pleasure to invite author participation in this Special Issue of Applied Sciences, entitled “Recent Advances in Geothermal Energy Exploitation”.
In the present day, the development and exploitation of renewable sources are considered fundamental key targets towards providing energy supply security, environmental protection, and affordability. In this context, geothermal energy represents a very interesting option, owing to its programmable characteristic and possible integration with intermittent renewable sources and innovative energy systems. Nevertheless, its actual contribution to worldwide cooling, heating, and power generation is relatively small.
This Special Issue aims to provide a forum for information and discussions regarding recent advances in the area of geothermal energy exploitation and the promotion of an efficient development and faster spread of the geothermal source. Articles presenting original results and case studies are particularly encouraged.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Innovative and traditional geothermal energy systems;
- Hybrid energy systems;
- Cogeneration and polygeneration;
- Distributed and small-scale generation;
- Heating and cooling applications;
- Assessment of geothermal sources and shallow geothermal potential;
- Exploration of geothermal fields and reservoir characterization;
- Numerical and experimental investigations on geothermal source exploitation;
- Assessment of environmental impacts;
- Review and economic studies on geothermal energy systems;
- Case studies and best practices;
- Policy development.

Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
