Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

New media platforms and social networks are shaping how individuals relate to others. Further, there is no doubt that the contents of social networks and new media platforms define how most of society perceives itself. From news and fake news posted on social networks, to the images and videos, and their filters, to the so-called challenges or new applications, such as virtual reality or augmented reality, the technology surrounding human communication on the internet is changing how we communicate and how we experience human interaction and human–computer interaction. Moreover, the irruption of the algorithms that curate what people see and what information is received on social networks, depending on their desires, engagement, interaction, or personal information, is changing how people relate to the society or their echo chambers.

After years of witnessing the incorporation of technological innovations in human communication and how to share our ideas with others, maybe it is time to analyze how the technology affects us and how we understand what we consume on social networks and new media and how we interact with the content and with others. Moreover, the need for deep analysis is even more critical after the COVID-19 pandemic, when millions of people worldwide interacted with others basically via the internet.

This Special Issue, entitled "Research Advances on User Interactions in Social Media Using Data Science Approaches", aims to reflect on recent research on how users interact and understand content in terms of new media and social networks and how social networks affect users' desires, feelings, or ideas from the perspective of Information Science and Data Science fields. We expect submissions focused on experimental analysis, using data-science-related approaches or proposing new methods to understand the relationship between users and social networks or new media and their contents and algorithms. New ideas proposing novel approaches, such as automating analyses using Machine Learning or Data Science approaches, and perspectives are also welcome.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following areas:

  • Automatic analysis of user experience in terms of new media and social networks;
  • Data-Science-mediated analysis of recommendation algorithms and their implications for social network users;
  • Studies on how the social network dynamics affect users using data engineering approaches;
  • Automated analyses of users' literacy related to visual or textual contents;
  • Analysis of information sharing between communities of users and their societal implications;
  • Audits of how social network algorithms shape society's perception of particular subjects and discussions;
  • Analysis of the impact of certain new technologies, including virtual reality and augmented reality, on social network users and their communication.

We hope this Special Issue will allow researchers to reflect on the relationship between users and content on social networks and new media and discuss current trends and implications regarding human communication and experiences with technology.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
