Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Our objective is to advance understanding of the patterns and processes governing ecosystem functions, interactions with the environment and the provision of ecosystem services. A central theme is how novel technology and recent research influence the environment and how changes in that environment impact ecosystems and hydrobiology. This Issue will publish novel research conducted at various spatial scales, with a preference to novel technology that provides data-rich support to enhance the understanding of ecosystems (e.g., water–biota) interplay. We encourage broadly significant studies of ecosystems that deal with cross-scale interactions and integrate new knowledge and technology that is relevant to environmental management or policies.
The Special Issue’s core topics include (but are not limited to):
- New insights into the interactions between water, nutrient and pollutant cycles with biotic components of ecosystems.
- Ecological consequences of land-use intensification and soil degradation, water-waste management, and associated mitigation technologies.
- Transdisciplinary knowledge decision-support tools for the integration of ecological engineering with ecohydrological biotechnologies into system solutions.
- GIS applications on water resources management, with quality testing components.
- Water - sediments - biota interactions in river environments: water pollution monitoring and rehabilitation solutions.
- Novel research technologies of water resources and ecosystem services as necessary components for enhanced ecosystem resilience from the perspective of SDGs and an International Hydrological Programme.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2300 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
