Antibiotics Use and Antimicrobial Stewardship

A section of Antibiotics (ISSN 2079-6382).

Section Information

Resistance to antibiotics is one of the main barriers to manage patients with bacterial infections worldwide, and the threat is increasing. It is well known that the inappropriate use of antibiotics at different levels is probably the driving source of resistance. This idea prompted the “One Health” concept some years ago.

We welcome studies describing how antibiotics are being prescribed, dispensed, administered or used in the real world, even how their waste is managed. This research helps identify points along the value and consumption chains that could be the basis for designing interventions to modify the current situation.

At the same time, we must learn from successful antibiotic stewardship experiences, especially those that go beyond hospital care and those testing innovative approaches which help to really modify behaviours and help change the global antibiotic resistance panorama.
