Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The COVID-19 pandemic has put viral diseases and their follow-up at the center of attention. In addition, growing scientific, ecological, and conservation interests in marine mammals make it desirable to treat viral infections that affect these animals. The growth of the human population with the growing anthropo-genic interference in wildlife, the rapid climate change, and the intensive industrialization of previously less-industrialized countries seem likely predisposing factors for the appearance of new pathological pro-cesses in these animals, or for the reappearance of old ones. Infectious diseases have always played a very important role in marine mammals, as shown by the morbillivirus outbreaks in both seals and cetaceans. In addition, these infectious diseases not only affect wild animals, but also those under human care, as oc-curred with the adenovirus outbreaks in sea lions and cetaceans. The existence of a substantial number of marine mammals under human care with high interaction with humans and their pets also raises the possi-bility of certain diseases in humanized marine mammals. All of this has prompted the journal Animals to call for a Special Issue on “Diagnosis and Surveillance on Viral Diseases in Marine Mammals”. This letter is an invitation to contribute articles to this Issue. Contributions can be in any of the article formats supported by this journal, particularly (but not only) in the form of research articles, reviews and view-points.
