Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Horses (including ponies and donkeys) are among the most transported animals in the world. They stand apart from other livestock, in both the frequency with which they are transported and their reason for being transported. Horses may be moved for sport, leisure, breeding, sale, fattening and slaughter; they may travel by road, sea or air; and they may be transported many times throughout their lives. Each journey, regardless of length, can pose a significant health and welfare risk. The greatest risks arise when journeys are not properly planned, the drivers and/or handlers are not competently trained, and the horses are not adequately prepared, or fit, for the intended journey.

Many additional factors can affect the health and welfare of horses during transport, from space allowance to vehicle design; from journey time to the frequency and length of rest stops; and from temperature to the breed of horse.  With this in mind, we welcome the submission of original research focusing on transport practices and how they impact horse health and welfare.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following: equine welfare, human–animal interaction, and the transportation welfare of equids.

We look forward to receiving your contributions.
