Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

From a global perspective, we can consider that the last four years have been turbulent. The emergence at the end of 2019 of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and its derived disease, COVID-19, shook socio-economic systems around the world. COVID-19 did not only reveal the limits of health systems; it also highlighted the fragility of food systems, and the ease with which they can be disrupted. Official bodies’ actions to limit the spread of the virus propelled the debate around economic models and agrifood to the front line. After those first months of chaos and uncertainty, it is time to consider the permanent effects and alterations detected in rural areas around the world.

From an inter- and transdisciplinary perspective, this Special Issue aims (e.g., geography, agricultural sciences, environmental sciences, economics, and sociology) to offer answers to the unknowns posed by this new situation and to reflect on the viability of the current agrifood system and its alternatives. For this issue, we welcome findings in relation to the impacts, alterations, and corrective actions in the production, processing, and trade of agricultural products. In addition, works that refer to the implications of the eruption of the phenomenon in rural territories, the livelihoods of rural populations, and the possible alterations to the social relations of agrarian communities are encouraged.
