Special Issue Information

Dear colleagues,

This Special Issue focuses on topics related to the development, calibration, and validation of flight mechanics models (performance and flight dynamics) for atmospheric flight vehicles. Performance models include (but are not limited to) aero-propulsive performance models, propulsor fuel burn models, takeoff and landing field performance models, overall mission performance models, etc. Flight mechanics models additionally include models of stability and control characteristics and mass properties that allow for time-domain flight simulation, flight control law development, gust/turbulence encounter analyses, piloted simulations, etc. The developed models should be calibrated using and/or validated against real-world flight data. The methods utilized for model calibration and validation as well as calibration and validation results are themselves desired focus areas.

Authors are invited to submit full research articles or review manuscripts addressing (but not limited to) the following focus areas:

  • Retrospective estimation of performance characteristics from real-world flight data;
  • Use of aircraft performance models to assess or enhance safety of flight operations;
  • Calibration and validation of performance models against real-world flight data—techniques and results;
  • Calibration and validation of flight dynamics models against flight data—techniques and results;
  • Review papers describing current state-of-the-art as well as challenges and opportunities for flight mechanics model calibration and validation.

The focus areas above are not exhaustive and are not intended to exclude articles from other focus areas provided they align with the Special Issue topic. We look forward to receiving your submissions and invite you to contact the Guest Editor regarding any questions.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Aerospace is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
