Cover Story (view full-size image): Strains belonging to phylogroup B1 and isolated from extraintestinal infections are considered opportunistic pathogens, and their virulence potential has been neglected. An extensive genomic and phenotypic evaluation of a phylogroup B1 strain isolated from extraintestinal infection showed that strains belonging to ST101 harbor a true virulence potential to cause extraintestinal infections, as determined by its capacity to interact and invade diverse cell lineages, resist serum, and produce biofilm, in addition to being virulent in an animal model. Moreover, phylogenetic analysis of the ST101 complex highlighted their worldwide distribution and involvement with the multidrug-resistant (MDR) phenotype, harboring not only the blaCTX-M, blaOXA, and blaNDM but also mcr1, fosA3, and qnrS1 genes. The study highlights the importance of studying the virulence potential of any type of MDR strain isolated from [...] Read more.
