Cover Story (view full-size image): A novel human coronavirus (CoV) was identified from a cluster of pneumonia patients in Wuhan, China in December, 2019. This marks the third CoV emergence of the 21st century following SARS-CoV (2002–2003) and MERS-CoV (2012–present) and highlights the ongoing risk of CoV zoonoses. While questions remain about early outbreak communication, the first virus sequence was posted on 10 January 2020, leading to a fast-paced and collaborative international effort to understand the new virus, SARS-CoV-2, and its disease COVID-19. The SARS-CoV-2 genome has a high-sequence similarity to bat CoVs, suggesting origins in bats and possibly evolution in an intermediate host.
